2026 Outlook
Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love form the fifth-best coach-QB pairing in football. Love has shown the chops needed to win—he's thrown 25+ touchdowns twice, averaged 7.6 yards per attempt for his career, and is terrific at avoiding sacks (4.27% of dropbacks, best among active QBs). Most impressively, Love posted a +95.6 EPA in 2025, ranking third behind only Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford. The problem for the Packers has been finding enough star power to make deep runs—over the past three years, they've been a wild-card team with only one playoff win. The defense allowed 27.2 points per game during this stretch, the main culprit. Edge rusher Micah Parsons was expected to help, but he tore his ACL in Week 15. Packers have the bones of a championship team but need defensive reinforcements (per SI's 2026 Ranking of the NFL's Coach-QB Duos).
Traded Dontayvion Wicks to Philadelphia in April, freeing up draft capital and WR depth-chart space. Core receivers are Watson and Golden with Reed in the slot; Williams is a promising third-rounder from 2025 (per Updated Packers draft picks, WR depth chart following Dontayvion Wicks trade). Head coach Matt LaFleur is shifting the team toward a more physical, balanced identity with improvements to the offensive line (Sean Rhyan, Jordan Morgan, Zach Tom, Aaron Banks) and running game to take advantage of Lambeau's late-season home conditions (per Will the Packers Restore the Lambeau Mystique This Year?). Schedule favorable in second half: four of final five games at home, including matchups against warm-weather teams.
Depth concerns loom after losing veteran edge rushers. Micah Parsels' ACL tear and combined 15.5 sacks from edge replacements Van Ness, Sorrell, Oliver, and Mosby create pass-rush vulnerability that could expose the cornerback group. Cornerback depth improved via free agency (St-Juste) and draft (Cisse, Jackson), potentially making Valentine tradeable. At running back, Marshawn Lloyd's ongoing injury history (hamstrings, ankles, groins, calves) could force the Packers to keep four RBs if he proves unavailable for regular-season depth. Chris Brooks is the likely RB2, valued for his pass protection over Emanuel Wilson, but the running back room remains the subject of fierce camp competition (per The Packers' Fiercest Camp Battle Might Be For RB2). Receiver roster depth is uncertain after the Wicks trade; young options like Isaiah Neyor and J. Michael Sturdivant must step up (per Packers 53-Man Roster Projection as Key Battles Begin at OTAs This Week).
Lambeau Field home-field advantage is a strategic recovery point: late-season games (November/December) are scheduled at home, and Matt LaFleur is building a more physical, grind-it-out identity suited to cold-weather football. This shift targets late-season momentum and playoff positioning, though it depends on executing improved trench play and limiting explosive-pass reliance (per Will the Packers Restore the Lambeau Mystique This Year?).
Draft class expected to contribute immediately. Second-round CB Brandon Cisse has starting potential; third-round DL Chris McClellan is versatile and competing for starting reps; sixth-round K Trey Smack all but locked in as starter after release of Brandon McManus. Fourth-round DL Dani Dennis-Sutton could lead with special-teams impact (three blocked punts in college) and potential OLB reps if injury strikes. Potentially three starters on opening day—most likely Cisse (CB), McClellan (DL), and Smack (K) (per How Many Packers 2026 Draft Picks Could Be Starting Week 1?).
New DC Jonathan Gannon emphasized the Packers defense will be a "new system"—not Philadelphia or Arizona schemes—with emphasis on utilizing Xavier McKinney and other veteran pieces as Parsels returns from ACL tear. Gannon is designing a fresh defensive identity tailored to Green Bay personnel (per Rams 2026 opponent breakdown: Green Bay Packers).
