PIT Eli Heidenreich
NFL player. Position: RB. Team: PIT.
Quick Facts
- Position: RB
- Team: PIT (Pittsburgh Steelers)
2026 Outlook
Heidenreich is an athletic specimen competing for depth at running back in the Steelers' 2026 training camp. With Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren locked in as the top two backs, Heidenreich faces competition from Kaleb Johnson and Travis Homer for the remaining depth spots. His fit in an NFL offense remains somewhat of a projection—the Steelers' coaching staff will use training camp to determine whether his athleticism can translate to consistent production and whether he can coexist with multiple other options on the 53-man roster. (per Steelers Training Camp Battles —Three Dogs, But How Many Bones At Bottom Of RB Depth Chart?)
Sept 2 — Made 53-man roster as dual WR/RB: Heidenreich beat the odds to make the Steelers' 53-man roster, earning a rare dual-position designation as both wide receiver and running back. He emerged from training camp to land a spot on the final roster and will now take handoffs and receive passes from Aaron Rodgers. His versatility and athleticism from the Naval Academy proved enough to edge out other depth competition, though game-day roster status remains uncertain (teams can only suit up 46 of 53 players). The Bengals travel to Pittsburgh on Sept. 27 for a divisional matchup where the two Marines could face each other. (per These 2 Marines are now professional football players)
Role / Depth Chart
Competing for a depth role in a crowded Steelers running back room. Path to the roster depends on training camp performance against other backup options.
Injury Status
Missed practice during training camp with an undisclosed injury (2026-08-06). Did not participate in full-padded practice. Given his depth role in a crowded RB room, this missed time further diminishes his already-thin path to the 53-man roster. (per Steelers Suffer Multiple Injuries at Training Camp)
