Quick Facts

  • Position: S (Safety)
  • Team: DAL (Dallas Cowboys)
  • Previous team: Arizona Cardinals

2026 Outlook

Acquired in free agency by the Cowboys after stint with Arizona Cardinals. Thompson joins a Dallas secondary overhaul aimed at defensive improvement. At June OTAs, working off to the side with the rehab group while recovering from a pectoral strain (described as "nothing crazy" by HC Brian Schottenheimer). Expected to be ready by training camp (per Dallas Cowboys Injury Updates Following Second Week of OTAs).

Thompson represents a strong IDP value pick for 2026. He has recorded at least 58 solo tackles in five straight seasons and could push to crack his career high of 79 tackles (set in 2021-2022). Now without Budda Baker creating competition, Thompson has a clear path to solidify himself as a DB1 in IDP leagues. Currently treated as a DB3 by ADP and most rankings, he projects as a top-20 overall IDP option who could push into top-12 numbers. (per 6 IDP Sleepers (2026 Fantasy Football) - FantasyPros)

Late training camp (Sept 6): Thompson is the safety partner for rookie Caleb Downs in defensive coordinator Christian Parker's zone-heavy scheme. Downs plays deep in zone coverage with Thompson, operating as the "skeleton key" across the secondary. Thompson's tackle production should benefit from the defensive system's emphasis on controlled gap technique and calculated front shifts rather than gap-shooting—a scheme that allows safeties to flow to ball-carrier freely. (per Cowboys' Caleb Downs has always used his brain. Can his football IQ lead to NFL success?)

Injury Status

Hip flexor strain. Status as of August 4: "doing great" per HC Schottenheimer; expected to be ready for season (per Dallas Cowboys Injury Report After First Full-Pad Practice of Training Camp).
