Background
Petzing comes to Detroit after three seasons as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator and primary play caller. Known for his extensive experience evaluating talent and schemes, Petzing brings a modern approach to play design. HC Dan Campbell hired him to modernize the Lions' offense while leveraging elite skill-position talent on the roster. Petzing was specifically attracted to the Lions role for the opportunity to work with veteran QB Jared Goff, citing Goff's veteran status and intelligence as a primary draw.
Scheme and Tendencies
Petzing emphasizes a balanced offensive approach centered on run-game efficiency paired with modern passing concepts. Early OTA reports indicate focus on building the offense around RB Jahmyr Gibbs' versatility as both a run and receiving weapon. Known for high football intelligence and meticulous preparation; Goff describes him as "having an extra coach on the staff" in terms of game knowledge and work ethic. Expected to unlock additional efficiency from the Lions' top-5 scoring offense by improving consistency outside explosive plays.
