At mandatory minicamp on June 11, Sanders downplayed the whole "competition" framing when asked about the QB race. His direct quote (from the Shedeur Sanders page):
"I think the way how y'all look at things is different than how we look at things. We look at coming to practice every day, being the best player we can be as an individual and as a good teammate. Y'all look at it as like a competition. That's not really nothing I'm just focused on."
He emphasized his focus is on development, not the depth chart:
"I'm focused on developing as a player, like doing everything, getting as comfortable as I can in the offense in the scheme and playing with that confidence I had."
Context on the Battle
Despite the even-keel public comments, the competition is very real. Coach Todd Monken has said he won't name a starter until training camp/preseason — both QBs have "played well enough to earn the right to compete" and are splitting first-team reps evenly. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam also praised Sanders' offseason dedication, saying "his body looks better" and "my instincts are he'll come back ready to play."
