Are the Eagles the NFL's #1 nickel team?

Answered 2026-08-07 · from the ChatFFB news wiki

Strong case — the wiki doesn't literally hand the Eagles a "#1 nickel team" trophy, but the evidence is about as good as it gets:

  • Cooper DeJean is the anchor. As a slot cornerback in 2025 he led all NFL slot CBs in PFF coverage grade, catch rate allowed, passer rating allowed, and yards allowed per coverage snap — and he has never allowed a passing touchdown in slot coverage (from the Cooper DeJean page).
  • The nickel unit is loaded: DeJean rotates with All-Pro Quinyon Mitchell and new arrival Riq Woolen (6-4, 1-year/$12M), which the Eagles' own guys think gives them "the NFL's best secondary" (from the Cooper DeJean page).
  • Vic Fangio's scheme is built around this group — DeJean plays strong safety in base and slides back to nickel in sub-packages (from the Vic Fangio page).

The one wrinkle: DeJean splitting time at safety this year means he won't be in the slot on every down, but the secondary as a whole is arguably the NFL's most talented. On top of a 2025 defense that ranked 1st overall, I'd say yes — the Eagles are the nickel standard.
